Try pairing Chettinad Chicken Curry from Chili’s South Indian Cuisine, Seattle. Why it works: Spicy South Indian food? Dry-style riesling all the way! The 2019 Poet’s Leap Riesling has complex floral and tropical fruit flavors. The wine’s laser-sharp acidity and just enough residual sugar is an excellent match for flaming hot South Indian chicken curry, providing much-needed relief in between bites. The Matar Paneer (cottage cheese with peas) is a great option for vegetarians or for those who like their food mildly spiced. You can segue seamlessly into dessert territory with this vino – we highly recommend their Gulab Jamun.

Sangiovese, a quintessentially Italian grape, evokes so many more images than just Chianti, the delicious cherry-hued Tuscan wine for which it is best known. One could even say that it is symbolic of the good Italian life. Think Sangiovese, and rows of manicured cypress trees, undulating hills, and Renaissance architecture come unbidden to mind.

As the weather turns cold and we retreat indoors, instinctually we begin to look for warmer, heavier, and more robust wines. Here are three of our favorites for keeping us warm through the chilly winter days and nights.

Long Shadows boasts a collection of wines from participating vintners across the globe. The wines pay tribute to the Columbia Valley, so much so that they earned Long Shadows fourth place in the 2020 USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards for Best Tasting Room.

Our 2016 Pedestal Merlot was awarded "Best in Class" and Double Gold in the 2020 San Francisco International Wine Competition. Double Gold is awarded to the very few entries that receive a Gold medal rating by all members of the judging panel; these are among the finest wines in the world.

Over the past year I have had the chance to taste some of the great Merlots from Washington. I adore the 2016 Long Shadows Pedestal Merlot (OB, 96) which is dense, layered and has massive cellaring potential.

I recently had the chance to review the new Long Shadows releases and was once again blown away with their consistency, showing a beginning, middle and an end. I have long admired these wines and the brilliant vision of Allen Shoup, former CEO of Chateau Ste. Michelle.
